“This new version of sildenafil will save people hundreds of dollars each year,” said Paul Mancuso, the provincial minister of health. “This means that Canadians will no longer have to pay $4,000 a year to buy a tablet of this medicine.”
Canadian government officials said they plan to have the drug available to the public in late 2024.
The drug has been prescribed to more than 80 million Canadians, the country’s top health-care system.
The drug, which is made by AstraZeneca, the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company, has been a top seller in many countries for years.
“This drug is now the number one selling medicine on the black market,” said Paul Mancuso, the provincial minister of health.
“We’re very pleased to be able to offer the medicine on an even scale.”
In Canada, sildenafil XR is sold in tablet form and as a liquid suspension. It comes in strengths of 2.5mg and 5mg tablets, and is available in strengths of 100mg and 200mg tablets.
A spokeswoman for AstraZeneca said in a statement that the drug is an “important new addition to our portfolio.”
She said the company has been working to provide better safety and efficacy in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Sildenafil XR is a PDE5 inhibitor that acts by increasing the blood flow to the penis, which helps men to get and keep an erection.
“We are excited to be able to offer this drug to Canadians.”
The Canadian government is now in a position to provide the drug to the public in 2024.The drug is the first of a new class of medicines known as PDE5 inhibitors, which includes sildenafil and tadalafil.

The drug is available in tablet form and is available in strengths of 2.5mg, 5mg and 100mg tablets.
